CLUB REPORT
Meadowcreek Bass Club visited Lake Russell on December 9th 2007
for their monthly tournament. Blast off was out of Beaver Dam Marina at
safe light and weigh in was 3 pm. 12 members were able to make the trip.
Conditions at blast off were much warmer than it had been with temps in
the 50’s. An extremely thick fog rolled in shortly after daylight and
made navigation all but impossible. The sun did shine but failed to cut
through the fog until almost 9:45 am. Morning water temps were in the
lower 50’s but rose to almost 60* at weigh in.
Anglers reported slow fishing for the most part throughout the day,
although most agreed that the last hour or so of fishing was the best. The
first 2 and a half hours of the day was limited vastly by the fog. Most
anglers stopped at their first hole and didn’t crank their big motors
until after 9 am due to the lack of visibility.
Matt Hunter had the largest catch of the day with a mixed bag of spots and
lips that pushed the scales to just over 10 lbs. He reported catching fish
down to 60’ deep on a drop shot. All the fish he weighed were caught in
the span of about 2 hours. He had a lip and a spot both around 2.5 lbs and
rounded out his limit with 3 – 14” spots. The fish were feeding
heavily as seen in the pic of the spot, on 2” shad. Matt reported his ds
rig comprised of a 7’ St. Croix spinning rod with a Shimano reel spooled
with 8# vanish, a #4 mosquito owner hook and a ¼ oz XPS DS weight. Worm
was a Yamamoto spade tail.
Kenny Gaddis had the largest fish of the day a beautiful fat spot that
tipped the scales at 3.47. Kenny also had the second largest sack of the
day with a bag that pressed the scales to almost 9 lbs. Kenny only had 4
fish but had 2 fish, a lip and a spot that were over 3 lbs each. Kenny
reported that he caught his 3 of his 4 fish around 13-17’ on a jig. The
other was just caught out of just over 20’ water in a blown down tree on
a Jig also. Kenny was throwing the ¼ oz jig on 14# bass pro fluorocarbon
on a St. Croix 7’ custom jig rod. Kenny was targeting areas that had
deep water and standing timber nearby. Points with ledges and wood cover
were key areas.
Justin Beaty placed third. His bag was a mix of spots and lips. Justin
reports to have caught at least 2 limits of keeping fish but just
couldn’t hook up with a good fish. Justin’s sack weighed almost 7 lbs
and was caught mostly in deep water down to 55’. Justin found fish on
the ds rig but most of the fish he weighed were caught in typical Lanier
fashion by throwing a ¼ oz jig in standing timber in 45-60’ of water
where bait was present. Justin did report that later in the day he caught
a few fish, one which helped on a 3/16 shaky head with a custom poured
worm similar to a swamp crawler.
Bubba Swafford and Ricky Swafford placed fourth and fifth respectively
with almost 6 lbs and 5 lbs respectively. They fished out of the same boat
and both threw jigs all day long. The target area for Bubba and Ricky was
a ditch that was near standing timber and deep water. The ditch ran out
off the bank and went out to the deeper water. All their fish were caught
between 4’ and 20’ of water. Both Bubba and Ricky were throwing ¼ oz
jigs on 10# bass pro fluorocarbon.
Most all reported catching fish and several others brought fish to the
scales. We are also accepting new memberships at this time. Boaters and
Non boaters are welcome. We meet at Boating Atlanta off Buford Hwy, aka
Hwy 23 in Rest Haven just north of Buford on the first Monday of each
month at 7:30 pm. We would love for you to come join us. Look forward to
seeing you there and tight lines until then.
